Online
Drum Recording
Online
Drum Recording is the perfect solution if you want real drums played by a pro
drummer added to your musical projects. You no longer have to rent a studio,
technician and a drummer, Online Drum Recording integrates all three into one
person/studio.
What is
Online Drum Recording?
Online Drum Recording
is a recording studio specialised in recording drums and making optimal use
of the internet. You can upload your songs on this site and custom drumtakes
will be recorded for you in the studio. You will have plenty of opportunities
to express your thoughts about the drum tracks and to comment on the different
takes. At the end you will have your own separate drum tracks (like kick inside,
kick front, snare top, snare bottom, etc.) that you can import in your recording
software and mix them to your own liking.
Since the drummer is one and the same guy as the engineer, who also has his
own studio, prices are much lower than conventional studio recordings where
these individuals and facilities all have to be paid separately.
Because of the professional quality of these recordings and the inviting prices
this will be a relief for both the professional music industry and the recording
enthusiast. The first having the opportunity to save studio time and money without
having to compromise on the sound quality, the second finally having access
to affordable real drums.
Last but not least, Online Drum Recording can be very quick. If you need to,
you can have your own custom drum tracks within 24 hours!
Why
use real drums?
Despite
all drum machines, drum plug-ins and drum sample CDs on the market today, which
are definitely becoming better and better, there will always remain a call for
real drums. Although programmed drums can be a great addition to your musical
palette, once you find yourself trying to fake a real drummer it will be very
difficult if not impossible to get a convincing result. A real drummer can add
much more energy and musicality to your tracks and bring your tracks to life.
A real drummer plays your song, unlike a collection of generic drum samples.
Why
not record it yourself?
It
takes a lot of experience, gear and time to make a good drum recording. First
of all the recording room is crucial to the sound quality of the recording.
Which definitely holds good for the drumkit of course. Then there is a lot of
recording gear involved. At Online Drum Recording the standard kit is miked
with twelve microphones. Although it is absolutely possible to get great results
with fewer microphones, this also means twelve preamp channels, twelve channels
AD-conversion, a bulk of cables and a recording system capable of tracking twelve
audio tracks. Oh and let's not forget you need a good drummer too.
Most recording enthusiasts won't have all these facilities and would have to
make compromises when they would record drums themselves. For example by using
budget microphones. At Online Drum Recording there are no weak links in the
recording chain. Commercial studios on the other hand may have all the facilities,
however they still can benefit from the online method (see below).
Why
Online Drum Recording?
Online Drum Recording
makes recording drums much easier in a few ways.
- Planning the
session is easier since only one person (the drummer) has to be available.
- The Online
Drum Recording studio is always ready to roll, no expensive studio time is
wasted with drum and studio preparation.
- Recording can
take place sooner and quicker.
- Since only
one person has benefit financially, it's way cheaper than a conventional studio
recording session.
- It costs you
less time and you don't even have to leave your house or studio.
- It's without
any risk since you only pay when you are completely satisfied with the result
and cancellation is free.
I can think of
only one disadvantage, which is not being in the same place with one another.
This means having to play separately (which would otherwise be done in a lot
of cases anyway) and also not being able to comment right away. I tried to diminish
the latter by setting up a good order form which gives you a good checklist
plus extra facilities to instruct the drummer. And by giving you the ability
to give comments after the takes and request new takes.
HOW
IT WORKS
The
Online Drum Recording process is a simple process that consists of three basic
steps and gives you total control on how you want the drum tracks to sound. These
three steps are outlined below, you can also find a lot of detailed information
in the FAQ (frequently
asked questions) section.
Step 1: ordering
- Fill
out the order form
You fill out the online form on the 'get
started' page. In this form you will fill in some personal information
such as name and email address and information about your project. Both technical
and creative information are addressed, such as tempo, bit and sample rates
but also how you want the drums to be played and what kind of sound you are
after. You are also asked to give the date on which you want to review the
first take and the date on which you want to receive the final take.
- Upload
audio file and supporting files
In the online form you also upload the audio file of your project. This can
be a stereo mp3 file. Also can it be a sketch of a song or an almost finished
production, this depends on the order in which you choose to record your project.
This audio file should NOT include the drumpart. However, if you already have
a programmed or other version of the drumpart it is very much appreciated
that you upload it as a supporting file. Other supporting files you can think
of to upload is a click track (especially when the song includes tempo changes)
a drums score or an example of how you want the drums to sound.
- Confirmation
After you have submitted the form you will receive a confirmation of your
order. In case the first review and/or due date do not suit my schedule I
will propose new dates.
Step
2: reviewing
- Approve,
comment or cancel
No later than the first review date we agreed upon, you will receive an email
with a link to the audio file to review. This is a stereo mix of your project
with drums in high quality mp3. The email will give you three options: a)
to approve the take, b) to comment the take, c) to cancel the order. When
you are totally happy with the take right away you can approve it and jump
to step 3, however if you have comments on the drum part you can tell them
all and I will incorporate them into a new take (no extra costs). Again you
receive an email with a link for review and again you can give comments and
again I will record a new take without extra costs.
- Modifications
The first two modifications are free, so you can get up to three takes for
free. In most cases this will be enough to get a good result, however if you
want to have another take recorded after your third take you will have to
pay for each additional take in advance. Also a cancellation fee is introduced
at this point. When you pay for the fourth take you also pay a cancellation
fee. This cancellation fee can also be seen as a down payment, it will be
deducted from the total price at the end in case you do not cancel the order.
Please note that cancellation before the fourth take is totally free.
Step
3: Round off
- Purchase
When you are totally happy with a take you are directed to the Online Drum
Recording PayPal page where you can purchase your custom drum tracks.
- Download
or delivery
When the money has been received you receive an email with a link to your
private folder on the server where you can download your custom drum tracks.
Alternatively delivery per post is possible.
You will also receive an invoice from Online Drum Recording.
When your project is finished, it is very much appreciated if you send a copy
of the end result to Online Drum Recording.
THE
DRUMMER
The drummer that
will play the drums on your project is Don Wielogroch, a young professional
Dutch drummer. Don is an experienced live and studio drummer but also a skilled
studio engineer. He started drumming when he was ten years old and since then
music has played an important role in his life.
At the age of twelve he found himself playing in his first band. Since then
he has always been playing in several bands. He currently has two regular bands,
The George Experience and Out Of Control. The first being a funk orientated
band with jazz, soul, hip hop and rock influences in which he played with several
national and internationally well-known musicians such as Joseph Bowie (Defunkt),
Greg Boyer (Prince), Corey Parker (Maceo Parker) and Saskia Laroo. And the latter
being a popular coverband that plays a wide array of musical styles including
latin, rock, blues, R&B, rock 'n roll, disco, soul, dance and more.
In 2001 he got interested in audio recording and bought his first recording
gear. Since then he spent many hours in his studio recording bands and improving
his recording techniques as well as his recording gear. It was in 2006 when
he decided to go professional and updated his studio in order to apply to high
quality audio recording standards and founded Online Drum Recording.

THE
STUDIO
The Online Drum Recording
studio is based around a Mac Pro running Logic Pro. Mytek AD/DA converters handle
analog to digital and digital to analog conversion. Neumann, AKG, BLUE, Røde,
Sennheiser and Shure microphones are connected to Avalon, Millennia, Mindprint
and SSL preamps. Monitoring is done over PSI monitors.
The main drumkit is a Pearl Masters Mahogany Classic Limited Edition. Different
snare drums, drum heads, cymbals and sticks are available in order to get the
sound that suits your project best. Also available are percussion instruments
such as congas, cowbells, tambourines, jam-blocks, shakers, claves, chimes,
udu and darbuka.
Recording is done in 24 bits with possible sample rates ranging from 44.1 to
192 kHz. A standard drumkit is recorded with 12 microphones, including two ambience
microphones, however for those who prefer a mic set-up with fewer mics, things
can be adjusted as speaks for itself.

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Below you find
a selection of frequently asked questions and their answers. If the answer to
you questions can't be found below, feel free to contact info@onlinedrumrecording.com.
- What
are the standard 12 channels?
1: Kick inside, 2: kick front, 3: snare top, 4: snare bottom, 5: hihat, 6:
overhead left, 7: overhead right, 8: tom 1, 9: tom 2, 10: tom 3 and 11/12:
ambience left/right.
Note that left and right are from the drummer's point of view.
Channels will be omitted if not used for your project (e.g. if no toms are
used). More channels can also be added (e.g. an extra tom, second snare drum
or percussion instruments).
- How
do the tracks stay in sync?
Make sure that the 'play-along' file you upload in the order form starts at
a logical point (for example 00.00.00.00). The drum tracks will start at the
exact same point. When imported into your project at the same point they will
be in perfect sync.
- How
big will my download be?
This depends on the length of the tracks and the bit and sample rates used.
A standard 3-minute recording in 24 bits with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz, will
be approximately 150 MB. If you don't have a fast internet connection you
can choose to have the files delivered on CD-R, or DVD±R when the file
size exceeds the CD-R's capacity.
- How
does the introduction discount work?
Every new client automatically receives the introduction discount for his/her
first order. When your first order is a set of multiple orders, you can receive
both the introduction and bulk discount on the entire set of orders. The introduction
discount does not apply to additional modifications and cancellation fees.
- How
does the bulk discount work?
When you make more than one order at a time, you use the 'submit and make
another order' button in the order form. All orders made in a row apply for
the bulk discount. However if only one order makes it to the end because you
chose to cancel the others, your bulk discount expires. Bulk discounts do
not apply to additional modifications and cancellation fees.
- How
does the recommendation discount work?
When you recommend Online Drum Recording to someone and thus bring in a new
client, make sure that when this person makes his/her order he/she will leave
your name in the 'recommended by' field in the order form. You will then receive
the recommendation discount over your next order. You only receive a recommendation
discount for bringing in new clients. Although you can recommend Online Drum
Recording to several people and gain more than one recommendation discount,
you can only use one discount per order. You have to be a client of Online
Drum Recording (with at least one completed order) in order to receive a recommendation
discount. If your next order is a 'bulk' order (one set of orders), the recommendation
discount only applies to the first order of the set.
- How
can I request a modification
You can request a modification by replying to the 'Awaiting review' email
from Online Drum Recording. The first two modifications are free.
- How
can I buy an additional modification?
After you have reviewed your take and choose to comment the take you are directed
to the Online Drum Recording PayPal page where you can purchase an additional
modification. Please note that the first two modifications are free and that
a cancellation fee has to be paid along with the third modification.
- Why
do I have to pay a cancellation fee?
When you are requesting a third modification/fourth take you pay the third
modification plus a cancellation fee in advance. The cancellation fee can
be seen as a down payment and will be deducted from the total in case you
don't cancel the order. In case you wish to cancel you have already paid the
cancellation fee and there will be no extra costs. This cancellation fee is
50 euro.
- Can
I accept a previous take retroactively?
Yes you can. All takes that you review are stored until the end of the process.
So for example, if you initially had your doubts about the first take and
requested a modification, but after the modification you decide that the first
take was actually better. You can still purchase the first take.
- How
can I pay my order?
You can pay with PayPal,
major credit cards (Visa or MasterCard) or by bank transfer.
- When
do I pay my order?
You pay for your order after you have approved it. This way you can check
out Online Drum Recording without any risks.
- How
can I cancel my order?
Cancellation is really easy, you can just email that you want to cancel your
order. Cancellation is free until you request a third modification/fourth
take.
